If you read my page…A Day In The Life Of The Everday Vegan (that would be me ?) then you may recall me saying I try not to eat processed packaged food.
Well, I broke my own rule the other night?
For some reason I was in the mood for a hot dog. Maybe because summer is right around the corner, it’s actually already summer here in Florida. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of summer BBQs…Hot dogs.
I’ve tried different recipes for vegan hot dogs. The carrot dogs, not a big fan. The Tofu dogs, better than the carrot dogs, but still not a big fan.
My only option was packaged vegan veggie dogs. Thought these sounded good.
Then headed over to the bread aisle. Picked out some hot dog rolls. Checked the ingredients, got out my Phone, used my Is It Vegan app, and was on my way.
I like to cook my hot dogs under the broiler in my oven. It makes them nice and crisp and charded on the outside but still moist on the inside.
Once they were done I placed them on the roll and loaded it up with diced red onion, pickle relish and some Whole Grain Dijon Mustard from Trader Joe’s.
They were actually really good. The texture was the same as a regular hot dog. The taste was a little more mild then a regular hot dog, but still tasted good. I was pleasantly surprised.
So I guess the moral of this story is…don’t deprive yourself of things you like. There is always an option, whether you make it yourself or you buy it packaged.
Dont feel guilty if you eat something packaged or even vegan junk food once in awhile. We are human. As long as you stay true to your beliefs and vegan life style a packaged hot dog or a decadent vegan dessert isn’t going to go make you a bad person.
If you try these hot dogs or some other brand of vegan dogs let me know what you think.
Also if you have eaten a decadent vegan dessert that was the best thing ever, I’d really like to hear about that…Yum!
